Stringer/Runner
Longitudinal beam component of a pallet used to support the deck boards.
 
   
 
Notched Stringer
A stringer with cut outs in the lower side to allow entry for forks.
 
   
 
Deck
All of the boards that make up the top or bottom surface of a pallet.
 
   
 
Deck Board
Individual component of the pallet deck, laid down at right angles to the stringer.
 
   
 
Chamfered Deck Boards
Boards used on the bottom deck of pallet with one or two faces beveled to allow easier entry of pallet jack wheels.
 
   
 
Wing
The overhang of the deck board from the outside edge of the stringer.
 
   
 
Plate
A modified metal truss plate used with a hydraulic press to repair broken or cracked stringers.
 
   
 
Leg
A section of stringer used to repair a broken or cracked stringer.
 
   
 
Length
The dimension along the stringer. The first number given when citing pallet dimensions. ie: a 48x40 pallet would have a stringer dimension of 48" and a deck board of 40".
 
   
 
Width
The dimension of the deck board on a pallet. Always given as the second number when citing pallet dimensions.
 
   
 
GMA Pallet
Grocery Manufacturers Association pallet. Standard adopted for a 48"x40 4-w".
 
   
 
Two Way Pallet
A pallet with unnotched stringers that allows entry only from the ends.
 
   
 
Four Way Pallet
A pallet with openings on all four sides. It is actually a partial four-way pallet since the notched stringer allows for forks to enter but not a pallet jack.
 
   
 
Block Pallet
A type of pallet with blocks, square or cylindrical spacers, between the pallet decks. It is referred to as a true four-way entry because the pallet allows pallet jack access on all four sides
 
   
 
Wing Pallet
A pallet with top and bottom deck boards extending beyond the edges of stringers.
 
   
 
Flush Pallet
A pallet with the deck boards aligned flush with stringers along the sides of the pallet.
 
   
 
Skid
A pallet with no bottom deck.
 
   
 
Panel Deck Pallet
A pallet with a laminated, usually plywood deck.
 
   
 
Double Faced Pallet
A reversible pallet with full top and bottom decks, usually not pallet jackable.
 
   
 
Harwood
Wood from deciduous (leaf bearing) species of trees. Not related to the hardness of the wood.
 
   
 
Softwood
Wood from coniferous (needle bearing) trees. Not related to softness or density of the wood.
 
   
 
Combo/Hybrid Pallet
Pallet composed of new, used, hardwood, or softwood material. Pallet can be manufactured in any combination of grade or species of lumber.
 
   
 
Unit Load
Goods stacked on a pallet so as to be shipped or stored as a single entity.
 
   
 
Load Bearing Surface
Area of a pallet in contact with and supporting a unit load.
